I've asked about and everyone says there is a 3-7 year waiting list for small moorings let alone one big enough to take the 78 foot barge I'm longing to buy, but there is little point in buying it if I can't move it to Bristol as that's where I want to live.

I have cost estimates for buying the boat and doing basic repairs on it. But, I don't have a clue about the recurring costs for maintenance, mooring, etc. And I have no idea about the legal aspects about converting a boat into a co-operative living space and living in it.

Just a few months ago I moved to a "floating home" on the Willamette River in Portland, Oregon. It's incredibly beautiful; though my own house is a "tender house" (read: small and rustic, originally not meant to be a full time home), the houses around me are generally grand with large floating gardens, and the moorage is sandwiched between two wildlife refuges.

I wasn't familiar with local river life before moving here. I saw ospreys, ducks, a lot of blue herons (they nest nearby), countless geese that stream overhead in that class "v" pattern, a beaver, and large carp. We also have frequent visits from raccoons, which come up from between the floats with little leathery hands, and scuttle in their unique hunched posture across the floats looking for food.

One day, I was walking down the dock and saw an otter swimming along the shore, just a few yards away. Well, it looked like an otter; but then I noticed it was a bit scruffy; its hair looked more coarse than an otter's. So I thought... is it a beaver? As the creative swam by, I looked for its tail... and it was a long, thick rat tail! I was then told that what I had seen was a "nutria," a river rat. These things are the size of small dog; significantly larger than a cat. I don't think they cause any sort of harm, and I have only seen one more since then... but what a surprise!

Welcome to Houseboats, I'm your relatively inexperienced host, Maude. I started this "Tribe" on an impulse because I am looking to purchase and learning about English Narrowboats. I've always dreamed about living on a houseboat, and here in the Midlands of England, with its many canals, it seems a viable possibility. The Narrowboats in general are not expensive (finished 12,000 GBP + up) and do not cost that much in maintenance and upkeep (much less than a house or a flat here). It is kinda like living in a trailer or a caravan, just prettier, for the most part. The loan I will take out, is nothing compared to my student loans! (debt- It is a way of life!!!) It will hopefully be the first home I've ever owned! The first thing I've learned about living in houseboats is that the mooring is the most expensive thing about them: moorings in London, Birmingham, Paris, and Amsterdam for instance are difficult to find and breathtakingly expensive. Often here on the canals people just tie up next to a field in hopes that nobody will notice that they have been there for more than a night! My challenge for now, is not just to find a boat to live on, it is also to find adequate mooring close to my University and with a phone line for work! I've posted pictures of the inside of my dream Narrowboat. My two cats I know will be happy on the boat because I'm sure there will be plenty of rodents around where ever I moor! Hopefully I won't get the chance to see if they can swim!!

So, outside of my desire to learn more about liveaboard life in the UK, I also wanted to hear about other experiences of houseboat life and culture from around the world. (perhaps just in case this does not work out) Feel free to post your experiences, stories, links to relevant and interesting sites, classified ads and questions! Also, pictures of your houseboat or a houseboat you've stayed on would certainly be a plus!!!

One of the main expenses is paying for the pumping of crap out of your boat. Chemical toilets are often smelly, although quite a few people who aren't rich and live on boats in the UK have them. I was thinking, in order to save money in the long run, of getting a self-composting toilet which needs no water and often electricity to run, and either absorb the waste or turn it into nice harmless compost. What do you think? The ideal, which I certainly will not find, would be a toilet which turns crap into electricity!!! Oh the possibilities, oh! Oh, well...
