I am planning on building a house raft near the end of november. I am using two pontoons from a old trimaran. The cabin will be 8feet wide and 16feet long. It will use a paddle wheel powered by my bicycle.
My trip will start in North Carolina and will head toward the Keys.
If anyone wants to join for part of the trip or all, even just stop by for a drink let me know.

Re: House Raft
Tue, October 10, 2006 - 2:29 PMYou may want to check with the Coast Gard about your house raft. They have very specific rules and regs about certafying a craft as sea worthy. Without thier stamp of approvel you won't be alowed in the intercoastal water way. And what are your plans for fowel weather ? This type of flotation craft has terrible primary stability ! Flat water use only, there are a lot of wakes, and waves in the ICW. -

Tue, October 10, 2006 - 3:42 PMAlready checked with coast guard on regulations.
For stability i will have two outriggers that i can pull in while moving.
With the weather, we will just have to wait and see.
Take a look at www.floatingneutrinos.com that is where i got my idea. -

Re: House Raft
Tue, October 10, 2006 - 3:47 PMis a bicycle powered paddle week going to provide enough power? seems like the currents may prove stronger. -

Re: House Raft
Tue, October 10, 2006 - 4:17 PMYes it will be strong enough. It will only get about 2 knots an hour. I am working on connecting it to an electric motor from a golf cart. Then use the bicycle to charge my batteries.

Re: House Raft
Tue, October 10, 2006 - 4:32 PMYea, it's kinda hard to coast agenest the current. So it's non stop peddling. and adding outriggers increses resistance, and requires more power. power would seem to be the major issue. Put a motor on that sucker, just in case ! A 90 horse Merc. au'to do the trick
